OSCURA SELVA

Europe is close to losing its forests.

In the last 20 years the demand for wood in Europe has grown dramatically. To meet this need, some large corporations have cleared large areas of European forests. At the same time, a large illegal wood market has also developed, managed by large criminal associations, which often operate with the complicity of governments. The value of forest crime in Europe is estimated at a staggering €60 billion per year. Furthermore, the illegal timber market has increased by 26%, demonstrating that the problem is far from regressing.

The effects of this vast destruction are already visible, both locally and globally, and have a direct impact on populations, animals and the entire ecosystem.

Selva oscura means dark forest and Dante Alighieri enunciates it at the beginning of the Divine Comedy at the entrance of the forest that will lead him to heaven but passing first through hell. While the title Oscura selva wants to highlight how the human being is doing the reverse path, lived in an earthly paradise but is transforming it into hell because of his actions.
